A revitalised program for Australia’s research future – changes to the NCGP.

The revitalised National Competitive Grant Program (NCGP) was announced on 22 July 2026.

Discovery funding recognises the importance of early-stage research to Australia. It supports the national innovation system by contributing to:

  • the development of new ideas and knowledge
  • job creation
  • economic growth
  • an improved quality of life for Australians

The Discovery Program delivers benefit to Australia by building national research capacity through support for:

  • excellent, internationally competitive research by individuals and teams
  • research training and career development opportunities for Australian and international researchers
  • international collaboration
  • research in priority areas

Funding for research undertaken by individuals or teams.

Support for early career researchers.

Funding for mid-career researchers.

Support for internationally recognised research leaders.

Support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers to lead research projects.
