Professor Terry Nolan AO FAHMS is a Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor at The University of Melbourne. He trained in paediatrics and in epidemiology, as a medical graduate of The University of Western Australia, trained in paediatrics at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne and at the Montréal Children's Hospital, with a PhD in epidemiology and biostatistics at McGill University in Montréal. He established the Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit at the Royal Children's Hospital in 1989, was promoted to Professor in 1999 and became Deputy Head of Paediatrics within the School of Medicine. In 2001, he was appointed Foundation Head of the School of Population Health at The University of Melbourne (renamed Melbourne School of Population and Global Health in 2013 with incorporation of the Nossal Institute for Global Health). He established the Vaccination and Immunisation Research Group (VIRGo) in the early 1990s.

Early in his career, Professor Nolan’s research was in adjustment to chronic illness, incontinence, and in injury prevention and control. However, his major achievements have been in epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases and clinical trials of new vaccines. He has also had significant input into policy related to research investment in clinical and population health research, and in research quality and societal impact.

Professor Nolan has around 220 publications in refereed journals. He is the immediate past Chair of the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), and was a member and Deputy Chair of the National Health and Medical Research Council's (NHMRC) Research Committee over nine years.

Professor Nolan is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science, and a member of SAGE, the World Health Organisation's main advisory group on vaccines and immunisation. He was recognised in the 2014 as an Officer in the Order of Australia for ‘distinguished service to medicine as a leader in the field of epidemiology and population health, to policy development and advisory roles in immunisation, and to education’.

Professor Nolan was Chair of the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2015 Medical and Health Sciences Committee and Chair of the ERA  2010 Public and Allied Health Science Committee.
