Laureate Fellows showcase excellence in Australian research

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has today announced 16 new Australian Laureate Fellowships, who will receive a total of $48.6 million in ARC funding over five years to conduct pioneering research across a range of fields.

The Australian Laureate Fellowships scheme supports world-class researchers to conduct research in Australia, forge strong links across the research community both local and international, and train and mentor early-career researchers.

ARC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ms Judi Zielke PSM, said that Laureate Fellows are at the forefront of the national research landscape and are essential in expanding Australia’s knowledge base and research capability.

“The Australian Laureate Fellowship scheme is fundamental to the ARC’s Discovery Program, which supports ground-breaking contributions to a researcher’s field, from biotechnology to social science” Ms Zielke said.

“The scheme allows researchers to establish strong connections with research counterparts and industry partners, which is an integral part of providing an excellent research training environment and high-quality mentorship for early-career researchers.”

Australian Laureate Fellowships include two fellowships allocated to women researchers who will undertake an ambassadorial role to promote women in research and to encourage female early-career researchers to pursue a research career in Australia.

A Kathleen Fitzpatrick Australian Laureate Fellowship supports research in the humanities, arts and social science disciplines, while a Georgina Sweet Australian Laureate Fellowship supports research in the science and technology disciplines.

The 2022 awardees are:

  • Professor Larissa Behrendt – 2022 Kathleen Fitzpatrick Australian Laureate Fellowship – aims to fundamentally re-make Australia’s colonial legal institutions in order to remove the harm they current do to Indigenous people and communities.

  • Professor Joanne Etheridge – 2022 Georgina Sweet Australian Laureate Fellowship – aims to develop new ways to measure the structure of matter at the level of atoms by reimagining the fundamental concepts behind an electron microscope.

A full list of the new Australian Laureate Fellows and further research project details are available on the ARC website.
