Launch of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS)
The ARC was pleased to launch the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS) at RMIT University.
The Centre is revolutionising the measurement of time and space by finding inexpensive and readily available methods of making optical frequency combs, the world’s most accurate ruler, and making this largely untapped technology accessible to everyday Australians through consumer electronics such as smartphones and smartwatches.
Researchers at COMBS are also exploring how the application of optical frequency combs can be used in artificially intelligent data centres, sensors in vehicles, space craft and submarines, and the mapping of earthquakes and weather events to better manage civil infrastructure.
