ARC Research Hub to supercharge high-tech manufacturing

Today, Australian Research Council (ARC) Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dr Richard Johnson attended the launch of the ARC Research Hub for Advanced Manufacturing with 2D Materials.

Led by Monash University, the ARC Research Hub aims to develop the application of 2D materials for water treatment, batteries, functional paints and coatings, and other key areas of economic and technological interest.

Dr Johnson said that by using interdisciplinary approaches and strong collaboration between industry and academics, the Research Hub is expected to create new business opportunities, jobs, and revenue streams in technologically advanced products by leveraging these new and unique applications.

The ARC proudly supports research excellence that positively impacts everyday Australians, and this is evident in the establishment of the ARC Research Hub for Advanced Manufacturing with 2D Materials,” Dr Johnson said.

“This Research Hub has created an environment for researchers and industry partners to work together to deliver transformative outcomes in advanced manufacturing, helping Australian business to generate greater economic output in this fast growing market.”

“Among the research outcomes expected to emerge from the Hub will be high-powered,
low-cost graphene-based supercapacitors, capable of storing energy for use in electric vehicles, as well as improvements in the supply chain of materials used in the manufacturing of these devices, allowing industry to thrive,” Dr Johnson said.

During its 5-year life span, the Research Hub aims to bring together as many as 45 academic personnel from Australian universities, in addition to its 10 partner investigators, to learn, innovate, and apply new knowledge in the manufacturing of 2D materials.

The Research Hub is currently engaging 18 students, 11 researchers, and 6 research fellows.

The ARC is investing more than $4.3 million over 5 years under the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hubs scheme.
