2024 Laureate Profile: Professor Gabrielle Belz
Administering Organisation: The University of Queensland
Fellowship Project Summary
FL240100130 - Unravelling immune signalling networks that protect vertebrates from attack
Professor Belz aims to understand how the linings of the gut and lungs, known as the epithelium, protect the body by triggering immune responses or repairing damage. This project will use innovative methods to generate new knowledge about the way cells function at the epithelial barrier to preserve life. This new knowledge will enable the Australian biotechnology sector to develop a completely unique suite of biopharmaceuticals and platform technologies for nutrient and drug uptake and deliver novel vaccines. The outcomes of Professor Belz’s research will help build new sovereign capabilities in Australia, new workforce capabilities for advanced health and medical manufacturing and help reduce the burden of disease central to Australia’s National Preventative Health Strategy.
